Impossible is nothing – Jonah Lomu
Jonah Lomu was one of the greatest Rugby players of the 90’s. He was a big guy (6′5, 120kgs of muscle) and fast (100m in 10.89secs). It usually took two or three men at least to bring him down if he had any speed up. He was an icon in the Rugby community and a scared everyone who he played against.
In 1996 Lomu was diagnosed with a rare kidney disorder.
At the end of 1996 Lomu was diagnosed as having nephrotic syndrome, a rare and serious kidney disorder. His rugby union career went on hold whilst the disorder was treated. In May 2003, the NZRFU announced that Lomu had been put on dialysis three times a week due to deterioration in his kidney function. Side effects of Lomu’s dialysis treatment led to severe nerve damage in his feet and legs; his doctors warned him that he faced life in a wheelchair if a kidney transplant was not performed soon.
Lomu got a kidney transplant and not only recovered, but returned to professional rugby. You may think well if Lomu can play rugby which is alot more physical then inline hockey why can’t I play. Simple answer he got his kidney placed in the original place so it has alot more protection then mine. As mine is at the front it is exposed.
When your as famous as Lomu you get 1000’s of offers for a kidney so he could take his pick. I had one if it works then great if not then tough dont get a second chance. Lomu’s life saving gift came from ex-NZ-Lotto host and ZM breakfast radio host Grant Kereama.
Lomu has been a great inspiration to me as we had a similar condition both athletes who love playing sport. His condition didnt stop him play rugby to a high level and its not going to stop me playing hockey, this insipration can be carried over to everything I do in life.
