Sketched font in Ai
Create your own Skectchy font using Ai and following a few simple steps. There are alot of sketchy fonts/handwriten out there to choose from but what if you just want something a little different you can make your own very easily.
This is my first tutorial so I hope it makes sense and you can make some awesome handwriten sketchy effects with it.
I was having a look at a few fonts on dafont.com just to see if there were any half good ones I could use at some point and came across this sketched font.
Ok its a nice effect but what if you want it without the outline or with less or more scribbles or a different font you have to make your own. So thats what i have done.
So first we need to open illustrator (im using CS3) and type the text you want, if you change your mind later you can still edit the font once finished. Also select the font you think will look good once finished. Im using Helvetica Condensed…
Step 2
Next you want to remove all fills and strokes from the font, I wont show you a picture becasue its just going to be white.
Step 3
Now head over to your appearance panel which should be in your bottom right corner (if you cant see it go Window > Appearance) this is where you want to add a new fill.
Step 4
Make sure the fill is selected in your appearence window then select Effect > Stylize > Scribble. (Make sure you select stylize from under the illustrator effects otherwise you will be pulling your hair out trying to work out why it only says glowing edges.)
Step 5
now that you have open the dialog box for scribble you can play around with the effect, you have a drop down at the top which has presets in which arent bad but presets are boring we want something custom. I tend to leave the path overlap and variation alone, and just fiddle with the line options. The setting I have gone for are width 0.35mm, curviness 6% variation 36%, spacing 0.53mm variation 0.53mm you might want to leave it like that or you may want to advance on it below are a few ways to make it a bit more sexy.
Additions
You might want to add a stroke, so add a stoke but remember a clean line around your cool scribbled effect wont look right we need to mess it up a bit so go up to Effect > distort and transform > roughen. I chose 3 and 5 for the options.
You could have multiple scribbles there’s really a endless number of combinations you could do for this.
or you can use the same effect on objects and use gradients.
So next time you can make your own font and have it exactly how you want. Have fun making sketchy handwritten fonts.
