Make art while working
IOGraphica (previously named Mousepath) is not a new application but I finally got round to give it a try. Its a really simple app which runs in the background and tracks your mouse movements around your screen while you work, creating some very unusual patterns. I imagine it would be quite a nice tool for usabilty tests on websites as it would show the path the users are taking through your site.
The image above was mainly working in Photoshop and I was putting together a web concept, if you are familiar with Photoshop you will notice I was cleaning up my layers, as I do get quite messy within Photoshop. When the mouse is stationary black dots appear, the large one to the left was when I was helping putting together the new sofas for the office.
This is how it was looking after a full day of working in Photoshop. By the looks of it I was traveling to the bottom right corner a lot meaning i was probably deleting unwanted layers in my documents.
I wondered how it would look if I were to do a day of coding, so the next project was to code up the site I had been designing.
This was just 1.7 hours while working with HTML and CSS.
This was after a full day of coding, it gives the impression that less work has been done due to the lack of mouse movements. As many of you know when coding you use the keyboard more so the mouse movements are at a minimum.
I wasn’t really sure what to expect from the patterns but it does put into perspective on how much you rely on your mouse during the work day.
When looking at the patterns, do you think you will be buying a touch screen desktop any time soon and making all these movements with your fingers?
