EA Sports Cover Design
If you didn’t know I am a huge sports fan so I have been waiting for the new EA sports 2010 versions to come out, and I must say the covers are amazing this year! EA sports have slightly modified their trademark plain white with a cut out player and added some grit! I am tempted to buy them just for the covers!
Heres a 2008 cover
Pretty plain with the high contrast photo of the athlete, I couldn’t tell you who it is, NFL isn’t my game! This design was run across all the games in 2008, in 2009 they started adding grey lines to the white areas but still nothing to much.
Below are the EA 2010 covers which you may have seen in stores.

They have kept the high contrast photo but added grit and texture with splatter brushes. By using these brushes they have added movement and action to the covers as well as emotion, I love them. When you look at the NBA cover you will notice that the splats are actually textured blurs, I think that EA have done this because Basketball is not a dirty and muddy sport, so the ’splats’ would look a little out of place, so they went for speed agility and portray that through the blurs. NHL10 has straight cuts through sections which is to portray the cut up ice which does look good but also they seem to have cartooned Patrick Kane on the front which is a pretty nice effect, maybe they will all be on the 2011 covers like that?!
When I was in college this seemed like a very popular style with extreme sports and it was used a lot to portrait water in sports such as wake boarding and surfing. I collected a lot of grunge brushes, vectors and textures while in college and some gave amazing effects. I remember producing a extreme sports poster with a black background and pink splats…I thought it was amazing at the time…! Defiantly look out for grunge effects, even if you don’t need them just throw them in a Resources folder.

I just had to give this effect a go, so I found an image of Hank (Henrik Zetterberg of the Detroit Red Wings ) and went to work at splattering it!

Step 2
First thing was to download the actual brushes used on the EA sports covers from BittBox, Get them now.
What’s so great about these brushes:
They are set at 2457px as default so their huge!
They are FREE
After a bit of dodging and burning with multiple layers to give the player a bolder look, I started color matching and splatting.
If you look closely in the EA athletes you will notice splats not just around the athlete but on the athlete. Take another look at a few of the players jerseys and you will notice what I mean (easiest one to spot is on the NCAA football 10 cover.) So I have added a white splat above the ‘A’.
Take note of the white background coming into play and distorting the edges of the athletes, easy to achieve with a white splat brush gently positioned on the edge of the athlete.
Step 3
All I did here was carry on with matching colors and splattering, use different brushes and sizes, add depth to the artwork. I wanted to exaggerate it to show you how easy it was to do. I did cheat by finding a new image for the background as I didn’t want Brian Rafalski’s head in there, so I found a clear image on ice hockey boards. Desaturate the background image you use and mask it, use the splatter brushes to let some of the background through, but remember only a small section.
Step 4
Next I throw it into a EA sports xbox template, that is pretty easy to make, the EA sports logo can be found with a simple google search.
I always love being able to be messy in design, not having everything pixel perfect so you can experiment a lot more.
